A Youth Movement Envisioning Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind’s

AIESEC was founded way back in 1948 in 7 countries in Europe. Now, more than 68 years later we’re present in over 126 countries and territories and are still growing.

It is every young person’s responsibility to take a positive role shaping the future of our planet.

We believe every young person deserves the chance, and tools, to fulfil their potential.

We provide young people with self-driven, practical, global experiences. We enable them to see the world, make a real difference and discover what truly matters to them – all while creating a positive social impact.

Why we do it

Our belief is that sustainable, informed and globally-minded leadership can help us solve many of today’s challenges.

Our global platform enables young people with opportunities to grow in confidence, gain experience and can perhaps fail but learn fast. By doing so, they can learn more about themselves and the world around them – and just how much their actions can change the environment they live in.

What does AIESEC stand for?
Independent & Non-Political

AIESEC is a global platform for young people to explore and develop their leadership potential. We are a non-political, independent, not-for-profit organisation run by Youth and recent graduates of institutions of higher education. Its members are interested in world issues, leadership and management. AIESEC does not discriminate on the basis of ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion or national / social origin.

Since we were founded, we have engaged and developed over 1,000,000 young people who have been through an AIESEC experience. The impact of our organisation can be seen through our alumni who represent business, NGO and world leaders, including one Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Martti Atisaari of Finland.

What does AIESEC stand for?

AIESEC (pronounced eye-sek) was originally an acronym for Association Internationale des Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et Commerciales. AIESEC is no longer used as an acronym but simply as the name of the organisation.

Members of AIESEC are known as “AIESECers.”

We are a global network of young leaders under the age of 30 who strive to better themselves and the communities around them. We are passionate about world issues, leadership development, cultural understanding and experiential learning.

The organisation spans 126 countries and territories and every aspect of AIESEC’s operations are managed by Youth and recent graduates.

We have operated in this way since our inception, making us uniquely “by young people, for young people”, for over 65 years. The global leadership teams are elected by the membership annually.

Independent & Non-Political

AIESEC does not have a pre-defined or officially accepted political tendency or subscription.

AIESEC is not a subsidiary or dependent entity of any other bodies in its work, sustainability or decisions.

We are in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), affiliated with the UN DPI, member of ICMYO, and is recognised by UNESCO.

AIESEC was founded in 1948 in 7 countries in Europe by Jean Choplin (France), Bengt Sjøstrand (Sweden), and Dr. Albert Kaltenthaler (Germany). Over 65 years later we are present in 126 countries and territories.

AIESEC is officially founded after WWII with the mission “to expand the understanding of a nation by expanding the understanding of the individuals, changing the world one person at a time.”

AIESEC expands into the Middle East region – this was the first non-European presence in AIESEC. This year AIESEC passed 1,000 international exchange experiences for the first time.

AIESEC’s supporter base reaches fever pitch as Pope Paul VI welcomes AIESEC’s global leadership teams to international congress 1964 in Rome, Italy.

With annual global exchange numbers surpassing the 4,500 mark, manual matching of Youth to traineeships just couldn’t cut it. MIT Youth with the support of IBM break huge ground with the implementation of computerised systems.

By 1977, AIESEC had full member committees in 50 countries across 6 continents. Even more exciting was the fact that this expansion didn’t show any sign of slowing despite a global depression.

For the first time ever the network breaks the 5,000 international exchange mark in one calendar year. The feat is commended by supporters as an unprecedented achievement of Youth facilitating the experiences of their colleagues.

The network is united with a new mission statement: What we Envision: “peace and fulfilment of humankind’s potential.

Delegates at International Congress 2005 develop a mid-term ambition to push the organisation to achieve a greater impact. Generation 2010 enters with the goal of achieving annual exchanges exceeding 10,000 by 2010.

The AIESEC way evolves to include a descriptor: “AIESEC is a global non-political, independent, not-for-profit organisation run by Youth and recent graduates of institutions of higher education.

After delivering an unprecedented amount of exchanges the network meets again to decide upon AIESEC 2015. AIESEC’s membership then co-creates its contribution towards the global direction.

The end of the financial year 2011 shows signs of huge success for AIESEC. Over 18,000 international exchanges were delivered by 60,000 in 110 countries and territories.

2014 till present

Our most recent annual report (2013) sees AIESEC present in 124 countries and territories. We enabled over 26,000 international placements, coordinated by over 70,000 AIESECers.

The world is full of complex challenges that need better leadership to address them. Our belief is that responsible and entrepreneurial leadership can help us solve many of today’s challenges. Leaders who not only have the capabilities to create impact, but also the values that will guide their ethics and decision-making. From our early roots at the end of WWII our vision begins with changing the world not only from the outside, but from the inside out through the leaders we develop.

We proudly count a Nobel Peace Price laureate and numerous world, business and NGO leaders amongst our one million strong alumni community across the world. To date, we’ve delivered over 480,000 internship and volunteering experiences, and it’s all been led by young leaders who believe in making the world a better place.
