About us
What is AIESEC?
AIESEC is a Youth Leadership Movement and was founded way back in 1948 in 7 countries in Europe. Now, we’re present in over 120 countries and territories and are still growing.
AIESEC was established in 1948 after World War II, where seven youth across seven countries ad a dream of building cross-cultural understanding across nations. They hoped to change the world, one person and one internship at a time. Now, more than 230,000 young people have experienced an AIESEC exchange.
Today, the world is still full of complex challenges that need better leadership to address them. Our belief is that responsible and entrepreneurial leadership can help us solve many of today’s challenges. Leaders who not only have the capabilities to create impact, but also the values that will guide their ethics and decision-making. From our early roots at the end of WWII, our vision begins with changing the world not only from the outside, but from the inside out through the leaders we develop.
We believe it is every young person’s responsibility to take a positive role to shape the future. Every young person deserves the chance, and the tools to fulfil their potential. That’s why we in AIESEC provide young people with cross-cultural global experiences. We enable them to see the world and to make a real difference, all while creating a positive social impact.
Youth-run
We are a global network of young leaders under the age of 30 who strive to better themselves and the communities around them. We are passionate about world issues, leadership development, cultural understanding and experiential learning.
We have operated in this way since our inception, making us uniquely “by young people, for young people”, for over 65 years. The global leadership teams are elected by the membership annually.
Independent & Non-Political
AIESEC does not have a pre-defined or political tendency or subscription.
AIESEC is not a subsidiary or dependent entity of any other bodies in its work, sustainability or decisions.
We are in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), affiliated with the UN DPI, member of ICMYO, and is recognised by UNESCO.
Origins
AIESEC was founded in 1948 in 7 countries in Europe by Jean Choplin (France), Bengt Sjøstrand (Sweden), and Dr. Albert Kaltenthaler (Germany).
Over 65 years later, we are present in more than 120 countries and territories.
The organisation spans 126 countries and territories and every aspect of AIESEC’s operations are managed by Youth and recent graduates.
A LEADERSHIP ORGANIZATION
AIESEC is a global platform for young people to explore and develop their leadership potential. We are a non-political, independent, not-for-profit organisation run by Youth and recent graduates of institutions of higher education. Its members are interested in world issues, leadership and management. AIESEC does not discriminate on the basis of ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion or national/social origin.
In AIESEC, we believe that youth are the key to shaping a better future. Through each and every experience we provide, we strive the develop youth leaders with the following qualities.

Our story
AIESEC is officially founded after WWII with the mission “to expand the understanding of a nation by expanding the understanding of the individuals, changing the world one person at a time.”
AIESEC is officially founded after WWII with the mission “to expand the understanding of a nation by expanding the understanding of the individuals, changing the world one person at a time.”
For the first time ever the network breaks the 5,000 international exchange mark in one calendar year. The feat is commended by supporters as an unprecedented achievement of Youth facilitating the experiences of their colleagues.
In 2015, AIESEC’s youth leaders from 126 countries and territories in collaboration with the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth gathered at the United Nations Headquarters to promote and drive youth participation in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The relevance and contribution of AIESEC is clearer than ever.
AIESEC is currently present in more than 120 countries and territories. We enabled over 26,000 international experiences, coordinated by over 70,000 AIESECers. In sum, AIESEC is a global network of people that simply believe that youth leadership is not an option, but our responsibility.
